What is a Pizza Burger?

Pizza burgers are a simple burger recipe made to blend together two incredible foods into every bite. Using your favorite pizza sauce, burger patties, pepperoni, cheeses, and bread, every bite is a harmonious blend of seasonings and ingredients working well to satisfy.

I love making this pizza burger recipe every time that I get the chance because they’re so simple and easy, but also so wonderfully comforting.

  • Ground beef – I like to use 80/20 beef. This means that the ground beef I am using is 80% lean beef and 20% fat. For burgers, you really want a little fat to lend flavor and to keep them extra juicy.
  • Chopped pepperoni
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Dried oregano
  • Dried basil
  • Provolone – I used deli slices
  • Pepperoni slices
  • Pizza sauce -Jarred or homemade is fine. In a pinch, you could use marinara.
  • Hamburger buns

How To Make A Pizza Burger

On the BBQ

  • Set a grill outside to medium heat.
  • Mix the meat mixture together. Mix the ground meat, chopped pepperoni, garlic, salt, oregano, and basil in a big bowl. Mix by hand until everything is just right. Make 6 patties out of the beef.
  • Put the patties on the grill and let them cook for 4 minutes. Flip and cook for another 4 minutes. For burgers that are more well-done, cook for 5 minutes on each side. Put the slices of provolone cheese on the burgers 2 minutes before they are done cooking and cook until the cheese has melted.
  • Put each burger on a roll and add more pepperoni and tomato sauce on top. Serve with the top bun or as open-faced pizza burgers.

On The Stove

If you don’t have a grill, you can cook your burgers on the stove.

Set a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Put the patties in the pan and cook each side for about 3 to 5 minutes. Just like on a grill, don’t touch or press the burgers while they’re cooking. You want to make sure they stay juicy.

To add cheese to the burger, put slices of cheese on the burger and cover the pan with foil. Cheese will melt because of the steam.

Then put your pizza burgers together and serve them right away!

Recipe Tips

  • Making a patty: When I’m done making my patty, I like to make a hole in the middle of the burger with my thumb. You can see how I do this in my Basil Peach Pork Burger Recipe. This keeps the shape of the burger, and the hole keeps the burgers from getting big and puffy.
  • Ideas for the Top: I put on my favorite pizza sauce from a jar, slices of cheddar cheese, greens, and more pepperoni. A great addition would be bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepper rings, or olives.

Herbs and spices: If you don’t want to use each spice separately, you can use Italian Seasoning instead. You can add 1–2 teaspoons of it to the mix, based on how much taste you want.

A cheese: If you don’t want to use provolone or can’t find it, you could use sliced, chopped, or fresh mozzarella cheese instead. We basically want a cheese that melts like real pizza cheese but can also stand up to burger tastes.

Q: Can Pizza Burgers Be Made Ahead of Time?
A: Yes! Most of the time, I make my burgers ahead of time and put them on a plate. I put them in a plastic bag and put them in the fridge until I need them.

While the grill heats up, take the burgers out of the fridge so they can come to room temperature.
